Food insecurity is a serious issue that affects 1 in 10 people throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties. Many of these individuals are older adults and senior citizens who face problems such as fixed-income financial constraints, physical limitations, and a variety of other challenges that make it difficult to access the nutritious food they need. The result is a lack of nutrition, which can lead to an increased risk of chronic diseases, decreased physical and mental well-being, and reduced quality of life.

Community Food Share’s Elder Share program is designed specifically to address food insecurity among older adults. The program provides adults 60+ with nutritious food through a variety of delivery options, including home delivery, curbside pickup, community pantry pick-up, and choice model distributions in retirement homes as well. For those who are unable to participate in the program due to location, schedule conflicts, or other various reasons, the Elder Share program also offers resources and support to help access other food assistance and community resources through our partner agencies.

One of the key benefits of the Elder Share program is its ability to provide seniors with a variety of healthy food options, including fresh produce, dairy, meat, and other essentials. This helps to ensure that older adults have access to nutritious food, which can improve their overall health and well-being. Additionally, the Elder Share program is easy to access and offers flexible delivery options, making it convenient for seniors who may have mobility issues. In 2022 alone, the Elder Share program delivered over 5,800 meals to those in need. This feat was made possible by the hard work of our incredible volunteers, who handled well over 90% of the deliveries. Without their dedication, programs like the Elder Share would not have been achievable.”

The impact of the program doesn’t stop at food distribution, a focus on community engagement and outreach allows for the program to reach members of the community other than those it serves. Community Food Share works with local community organizations and volunteer groups to provide education and support for older adults who are facing food insecurity.

As food insecurity continues to be a growing concern for older adults and senior citizens in our communities, The Elder Share program will continue helping older adults facing food insecurity by providing them with access to nutritious food, resources, and support. Community Food Share will continue to ensure that all older adults have access to the nutritious food they need to maintain a healthy, fulfilling life.

“Because of Community Food Share, I’ve been able to do the things I love like cook and preserve food. That makes me happy, and it keeps me busy even though I can’t see.” Click here to read more of Debra’s story
