Welcoming Growth

At the heart of our mission, Community Roots, a Community Food Share (CFS) initiative, thrives on the philosophy of sustainable, local, and organic farming. Nestled on an acre of land generously leased from Anderson Farm, our dedicated full-time farmer, Katie Ketchum, with the support of staff and volunteers, produced over 14,000 lbs. of fresh produce in 2023, which was distributed to Neighbors at pantries across Broomfield and Boulder Counties. This endeavor highlights Community Food Share’s commitment to quality and aligns with our goal to meet our Neighbors’ dietary preferences and needs.

Unearthing Insights: 2023 Community Survey Results

Understanding the evolving preferences of our community is essential to meeting Community Food Share’s mission. In December 2023, we reached out to 500 Neighbors with a survey, receiving 188 responses that are shaping our 2024 farm plans. Key findings include:

  • Only 25% were aware of our farm, signaling a need for increased awareness.
  • An overwhelming 90% value local produce, with 75% prioritizing organic options.

Planting Seeds of Engagement: Future Plans and Initiatives

The interest doesn’t stop at farming. Our Neighbors are eager for workshops on food preservation, gardening in Colorado’s unique climate, and nutrition education. To address these interests, we’re excited to announce a pickling demonstration at our upcoming Resource Fair on May 11, 2024. (10 AM-1 PM at Clinica Family Health in Lafayette. Watch for more details in Food News!) Additionally, we’re exploring avenues for in-person and online culinary workshops, underscoring the importance of accessible nutrition education.

Our survey also uncovered a desire for more direct engagement with our farming process:

  • 65% expressed interest in farm visits to see where their food originates.
  • 58% are excited about the possibility of hands-on harvesting experiences.

We’ll use this feedback as a guide as we develop opportunities for tours and you-pick experiences, slated for announcement in late summer or early fall.

Nurturing Growth

Join Our Green Team: Volunteer Opportunities

Community Roots is a result of the collective effort and passion of individuals who believe in a sustainable and healthy future for everyone in our community. We offer a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience on the farm itself. Whether you’re passionate about sustainable agriculture, excited to learn about organic farming practices, or simply want to contribute to the well-being of your community, volunteering on our farm is a rewarding way to make a direct impact.

We’re looking for volunteers of all skill levels to assist with various tasks including planting, harvesting, and maintenance. This is your chance to be part of a team dedicated to providing fresh, local produce to those we serve and to learn about sustainable farming.

Nutrition Advocates: Educate and Inspire

Our nutrition team is also on the lookout for volunteers with a background or interest in nutrition and education. By joining our efforts, you can help us plan and execute enriching workshops, create engaging content, and spread awareness about healthy eating habits.
